I first visited New Mexico in 1984 and completely lost my heart. I return often, whenever I can and now know that I should have moved there years ago. Well, what's stopping me now!!??

PFF-Trains

The commentary below each picture was written on the reverse side of the postcard.

"South Buffalo Salute"-A red, white, and blue paint scheme created to celebrate the USA's 1976 Bicentennial, South Buffalo Railway.
"Midweight Mike"-Northern Pacific, a rare vintage color view, circa late 1940's. Her lines suggest a pre-WWII design rather than the "Mikes" usually seen in this post-war period.
"Land o' Goshen! Southern Pacific thunders past Goshen Junction, CA station. Engineer allows the semi-streamlined steamer to billow black heavy smoke, thrilling trackside fans in this 1957 view.
"Covered Wagons" were once quite plentiful on the Burlington Northern. Covered wagons such as this pair were acquired from predecessor roads in many colors, slowly assuming BN's handsome Cascade green livery. Alas, all are gone.

I can never pass a garage or yard sale without stopping, and while visiting Duluth, Minnesota for a mini-vacation last week-end I found these cards while browsing in one of the sales.

Postcard Friendship Friday-Birthday Greeting!!

I received this card 11 years ago from a friend on my birthday. She has since died, and I am so happy that I saved it! Had it not been for PFF I might not have checked my postcard collection looking for suitable cards, but I found it and it brought back happy memories!

And, I can't let this day pass without paying tribute to those who died on that tragic day and also for those left behind who continue to grieve.

PFF-Florida

I'm posting these cards a bit early because I'm on my way to Duluth, MN for the week-end for a mini-vacation to celebrate my birthday, which unfortunately lands on 9/11, a day of infamy for our country.

"The Seven Mile Bridge is located just south of Marathon in the fabulous Florida Keys. It is the longest over water span in the world famed Overseas Highway system, and is built on the road bed of the old Florida East Coast Railway to Key West." There's lots of internet information regarding it so if you're interested, just Google it and read the history of the Overseas Highway System.

This card was sent in 1948 from my husband who was 13 years old at the time to his Aunt and reads "Hi Fran, Was in the glass bottom boats today. Happy Easter. Love Jim"-The card itself calls the photo: "One Stop Service, 406 E. Ocklawaha Ave., (Silver Springs Blvd.) Florida Highway No. 40. Two blocks from heart of downtown, near theatres. Hot air heat, tiled baths with showers. Restaurant, soda fountain and gift shop featuring gift boxes of tree ripened fruits and fresh citrus juices. Phone 1063. Winter rates $5.00 and up. Reduced summer rates." Wonder what the rates are like now?!

PFF-Suid Africa

Tribal Life: A Zulu woman adorned with the ornate beadwork which is part of her national dress.
African Cultural Heritage: A Zulu woman wearing traditional headdress and beads.

I sent these postcards home to my family in 1996 when I was part of an educational summer Fulbright seminar for teachers in South Africa, a country I immediately loved!

PFF-The City of Light

The top two are postcards I sent to my family from Paris in 2000. Because they are among my favorite French scenes, I have larger versions of them framed and hanging on the walls in my home.

The Man and Boy With French Bread: Erwitt/Magnum Photos, Inc.
The Staircase: "Escalier a montmartre, 1950"-Rene-Jacques

The bottom two are obvious landmarks, the Eiffel Tower celebrating the year 2000 and the beautiful Notre Dame on the Seine. Those two are photos I took which I could easily turn into postcards, don't you think?

PFF Door County, Wisconsin

DoorCounty has the most lighthouses in addition to state parks than any other county in the US. Pictured above are five of the ten lighthouses located in the County.

Just a short ferry ride from the Northport pier terminal at the tip of the Peninsula will take you to this quiet island community.

The 70 mile long peninsula and 250 miles of shoreline provide residents and visitors endless hours of activity.

We're still vacationing on Washington Island. When we return next week I'll post more cards from my very own vacation Paradise Island.

I've always wanted to take a cruise on a small boat on the inner passage, but haven't managed to do that yet. It would be wondeful to go to Denali to see all the wild life: Caribou, Grizzlies, Moose, and Mountain Sheep to name a few. Those typical delights that I have included on my postcards are somewhat tamer than the animals I mentioned!

We are still on vacation in Door County but will return the last week of August. Come back!

On a trip to Thailand with a group of educators, we took a day trip from Chang Mai to visit northern hilltribes. What an experience! The children, like children the world over, are beautiful! The women were industrious, hard workers, many of whom were also wily and aggressive vendors bent upon selling their crafts to the tourists. Didn't see many men; they, I guess, were out working the fields for their families.

POSTSCRIPT: We're leaving in a few days to vacation on Washington Island in Door County. I'll schedule postcards while I'm gone on PFF so come back!

Previously I had been posting PFF on my other photo blog, Visual St. Paul but since I joined Postcrossing, I decided to start a blog exclusively for postcards.

Several years ago I spent the summer in India, and despite the heat I fell in love with the country. At the time I was teaching high school English in St. Paul, MN and was awarded a summer Fulbright to study in India. Our group of 20 English teachers and administrators plus another group of history teachers toured the entire subcontinent of India. I came back with lots of classroom materials, life-long friendships, an experience I will never forget (even years later now!), and a love for the people and culture of this exotic land. YES! I did get to ride on an elephant...on that trip and years later again in Thailand. Perhaps I'll make a postcard from one of my photos!!
